From our friends at Poongmul Movement Builders:
IS IT TIME FOR PRIDE YET?
It is for us! The coordinators at Poongmul Movement Builders (PMB) are bringing mad love to our community for NYC Pride 2017. We are gearing up for what we hope will be the largest poongmul drumming contingent in our history (according to one coordinator’s dream).
WE WANT YOU
Ever wonder what it’s like to be one of the most loved and badass LGBTQ API’s and their allies at NYC Pride? This is your chance! Your presence matters more than ever. We are open to all abilities and ages. Allies are always welcome. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced player, you’re perfect for us.
Please contact Eliza Rhee ([email protected]) for more information and/or to be added to our email group.
PRACTICE MAKES…
We build ample time into the schedule for our beginners. In March, beginners will learn about PMB, the history of poongmul, sit down with their instruments and practice, practice, practice. You will make new friends and reconnect with old ones. You will find a fabulous community. You will become rain, wind, clouds and thunder. But most of all, you will have fun. Lots of it.
Note that advanced and experienced players will join us around May. Together we’ll learn some simple choreography and gel as a team. Final practice schedule to be announced.
WHO WE ARE
PMB is a safe space for Queer Trans Gender Non-Conforming Asian and Pacific Islander identified community members and their allies. We celebrate our visibility, pride, and empowerment through Korean traditional drumming.
Chris Chung, our beloved teacher and founding member of PMB, will be returning as our Sangswe (1st lead). Kevin Park, a seasoned API community lead and versatile samul-nori player, has graciously accepted the challenge to be our Buswe (2nd lead). Aileen Kim, a powerful janggu and buk player, will be training as our third lead. Eliza Rhee, a janggu cuddlist, will be coordinating behind the scenes and joining in on the fun in late Spring.
Our alumni and members at large are located around the world. For nearly a decade, we have all come together at one point in our lives to drum in NYC Pride. Many of us several times over. A core group also continues to focus on samul-nori progression here in NYC. And others have organized around the country for some of the most important marches of our times. We are truly everywhere!
Much love from your PMB leads,
Eliza, Aileen & Chris
