The annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYECon) is an all day conference which aims to provide resources and tools to all youths and their families, regardless of their immigration status to be empowered and organize within their communities.
Our theme this year, “Remember Our Roots, Fight for Liberation,” connects us not only to our migration history and the policies that forced many of us to migrate, but to a path where we can build towards joint liberation. It is a history of resistance within our countries, families, communities, schools, states, against policies that displaced people and changed the future of the immigration system.
To be Rooted in Liberation means to resist and grow through our lived experiences and our shared past. We come from a legacy of fighters and movement builders, and we will continue to fight for our collective liberation.
This year’s conference will bring together hundreds of youth, family members, and educators to meet with high school and college students, community organizers, lawyers, and professional development leaders. IYECon will include workshops for undocumented youth, about the college process, alternatives to college, as well as creative ways to organize in one’s own community within academic spaces and on the street. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Child care and translation will be provided as well.
We invite you to encourage anyone whom you think will benefit from this event to attend. We will be sharing resources, building community, and engaging in conversations on the role that higher education plays in overall community advancement and organizing. We hope you can help us in sharing this initiative.
