Richard Fung’s DIRTY LAUNDRY (1996) explores the queer history of nineteenth-century Chinese immigration to Canada, and REX VS. SINGH (2008) reveals the plight of two Sikh men entrapped by Vancouver police in 1915 and accused of the crime of sodomy. These two films deepen our understanding of the LGBTQ movement in North America, which will be the focus of a post-screening panel discussion featuring scholars and activists, including Rick Lee (Rutgers University) and an organizer from SALGA-NYC for the queer South Asian community.
Fung is a Trinidad-born, Toronto-based video artist and queer cultural critic who is the recipient of the 2015 Kessler Award from CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies. For more information, see www.clags.org.
