In the age of Black Lives Matter (BLM), rampant police violence is disproportionately directed at communities of color, and the lack of police accountability enables such behavior. The current Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) can only recommend discipline in the case of misconduct, and the board is all appointed by the Mayor, City Council, and Police Commissioner, and NOT by the community they serve.
GAPIMNY stands with New Yorkers in banding together to pass legislation that would give us an elected civilian complaint review board (ECRB). ECRB members are elected at the community level, offering genuine oversight and recourse to victims of police abuse. A civilian complaint review board is supposed to represent the people and hold police accountable. This can only be done if they are elected and not appointed through partisan political interests.
