2010 QAPI Town Hall meeting (& Steering Committee Elections):
Moving Forward – Building a stronger QAPI community in NYC

Time: Friday, Jan. 15th from 8-10PM
(Elections will be conducted 8-8:30pm)
Location: The LGBT Center, 208 W. 13th St. between 7th& 8th Ave.

Inspired by the North East regional caucus held at NQAPIA’s national QAPI conference in 2009, we will host an open discussion to accomplish greater inter-group collaboration within our QAPI community. We will be welcoming representatives from the QAPI organization below, and we will focus on the next steps in reaching this goal.

In addition, GAPIMNY will be holding our annual steering committee elections. GAPIMNY members may take part.

QAPI Groups represented at the Townhall meeting (As of 1/11):

Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS (APICHA): APICHA’s mission is to combat HIV/AIDS stigma and related discrimination, to prevent the spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the Asian and Pacific Islander (A&PI) communities, and to provide care and treatment for A&PIs living with HIV/AIDS and their families.

Barangay: Barangay NY/NJ is a group created to serve the needs and interests of all segments of the Philippine LGBTQ Community in New York City and New Jersey. It is committed to providing a supportive safe space to discuss issues relevant to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning people of Philippine descent.

Gay Asian & Pacific Islander Men of New York (GAPIMNY): Founded in 1990, the Gay Asian & Pacific Islander Men of New York (GAPIMNY) has provided a safe and supportive social, political, and educational space for gay, bisexual, and questioning men and transgender people of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. GAPIMNY is a membership-based organization whose goal is to empower Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Asian and Pacific Islander’s through a range of social, educational, peer-support, cultural, and political activities. We work in coalition with other community organizations to help educate the API ethnic and LGBT communities on issues of race, sexuality, gender, and health.

National Queer Asian & Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA): To advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian Americans, including South Asians, and Pacific Islanders. To network LGBT Asian American leaders and build organizational capacity. To be a voice for Asian Americans and immigrants in the LGBT community and for LGBTs in the mainstream Asian American community.

Q-Wave: Q-Wave is dedicated to strengthening the voices of lesbian/bisexual/queer women and transgender/gender variant people of Asian descent. We strive to build a supportive, progressive community by promoting visibility and empowerment through social, political, and educational organizing.

South Asian Lesbian and Gay Association of New York (SALGA): The South Asian Lesbian and Gay Association of New York City [SALGA-NYC] is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization, serving the South Asian LGBT & Questioning community for over 10 years.
