A new Asian American musical is making its debut on July 9 as the Opening Night production of the New York Musical Festival (NYMF)!
Interstate is a pop-rock poetry musical that follows a transgender spoken word performer as he goes on a cross-country tour with his best friend, a lesbian singer-songwriter. The band’s fiercely political and deeply personal music touches a transgender South Asian teenage boy living in Kentucky, and he finds solace in their art as he struggles with his own identity and family. Written by Kit Yan and Melissa Li, Interstate addresses racism, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, toxic masculinity, and xenophobia head-on by telling the story of queer Asians who face oppression at the intersection of their identities.
GAPIMNY is also hosting a group outing to go see lnterstate during the Sunday afternoon showing! GAPIMNY is subsidizing tickets so that they only cost $10 each for paid GAPIMNY members (normal price is $32 per ticket). Please RSVP at the link below and send $10 to @GAPIMNY via Venmo to hold your seat! If that poses a financial hardship, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll work it out. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
